Verna Marie Schoenauer Kohles

May 5, 1924 — February 11, 2011

Verna Marie Schoenauer Kohles, 86, died Friday at the Golden Living Center in Norfolk. Her funeral will be Tuesday February 15th at 10:30am at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Plainview. Burial will be at Pleasant View Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-8 pm Monday at Ashburn Funeral Home in Plainview.



Verna was born May 5, 1924, south of Brunswick to JC & Vera (Nash) Buche. She was baptized at the Crawford Valley Methodist Church in 1926. She attended several different schools growing up in the Plainview – Brunswick area, till the 10th grade, when she quit to help her family.



Verna married Orvil Schoenauer on June 29, 1945. They lived their entire married life in Brunswick where they raised 6 kids. Orvil died in July 1995 after they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.



Verna worked at the grocery store for her parents, later for Bill & Marilyn Scranton at the same grocery store. She worked at the Plainview Hospital in the kitchen for a short time, then managed the grocery store in Brunswick for Owen & Viola Blair for 11½ years till the store closed. She then worked for Judy Ruth in Plainview doing mainly sewing, which she had done as a hobby most of her life.



Verna received the Ak-Sar-Ben Good Neighbor award in 1990 at the Brunswick Centennial Celebration.



Verna married Dale Kohles in February 2000. They lived in Bloomfield on Dale’s farm until she began having health problems. She moved to the Chateau – Golden Living Center in Norfolk in 2006.



Verna is survived by children, Darlene (Jim) Schimmels, Ray (Jane) Schoenauer, Linda (Duane) Pittet, Larry (Pat) Schoenauer, John (Susan) Schoenauer, Nancy (Albert) Reeves, husband, Dale and his family, sisters, Almeda (John) Hays, Wilma Rumsey, Betty Sawyer, UnaLee (Kenny) Sutter, brother Harold (Ruth) Buche, sister-in-law JoAnn Buche, 15 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.



She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Orvil, 1 grandson, 1 grandaughter, 1 brother (Lloyd) and 2 brother-in-laws (Wayne Rumsey & LuVerne Sawyer).
