OBITUARY---BETTY SAWYER
Betty Lucille Nelson, the oldest of five siblings, was born October 16, 1925, to August and Ella (Woodard) Nelson on a farm near Royal. She attended country school district 78 through the 8th grade, and graduated from Brunswick high school in 1943.
Betty attended Wayne State College and taught school several years including substitute teaching.
On July 6, 1947 she married Ervin Sawyer from Royal, the ceremony taking place at the Brunswick Christian Missionary Alliance Church. The young couple lived in Brunswick until 1954 when they moved to her home place, and her parents moved to Brunswick. Betty enjoyed helping with the farm work, and had a special love and talent for working with flowers, which was very evident. The Sawyers lived on the farm 41 years.
She was a member of the Christian Missionary Alliance Church in Brunswick, and an active member of the Alliance Women. She taught Sunday School, Bible school, and was director of junior and senior choirs in earlier years, also choir member and soloist. She was a lover of music which was a way of expressing her love for the Lord. She sang at many weddings, funerals, and other events.
Betty and Ervin moved to Neligh in 1995, where Betty enjoyed various clubs, including the Northeast Nebraska Betty Club, and was a member of the Auxiliary #172 in Neligh. She enjoyed company, and always had the coffee pot on and a lunch ready at a moments notice for unannounced visitors, and enjoyed baking, trying out new recipes and entertaining.
The Sawyers moved to Norfolk in 2005. After Ervin’s death Betty moved to The Golden Living Center in April, 2009.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Ervin, in April 2007, parents, August and Ella Nelson; sisters, twins, Bethel and Bernice and Beverly Jean, .
Survivors are: A sister Bernadine Hughes, 8 Nephews and Nieces and a host of great Nephews and Nieces.
Betty died at the age of 86 at the Golden Living Center in Neligh. Services were held July 3, at 10:00 A.M. at the Brunswick Community Church with burial in the Brunswick Cemetery. Visitation was from 5-7 PM. Monday July 2nd at the Ashburn Funeral Home in Plainview.
