Services for John L. Stueckrath, 83, of Plainview will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 10, 2012, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Plainview, Nebraska with burial at Pleasant View Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday, July 9, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Plainview. John died peacefully at home following a brief illness of cancer.
John “Jack” Stueckrath was born October 6, 1928 at Randolph to Lou and Ida (Kruger) Stueckrath. He was baptized at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Randolph and was confirmed March 30, 1947 at Immanuel Lutheran Church of rural Plainview. He was the third oldest of nine children and attended school in Knox County through the 8th grade.
In 1947, he moved to North Dakota where he met his future wife, Dorean Albin, at a dance. They were united in marriage on June 6, 1951 at Immanuel Lutheran Church of rural Plainview.
In 1951, during the Korean War, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and stationed in Germany where he served as Corporal for 15 months. In 1953, he was honorably discharged and returned to North Dakota. He moved back to Nebraska in the spring of 1954 and began farming northeast of Plainview. Five years later, he moved to a farm northwest of Osmond.
During his lifetime he was a member and president of the Osmond Cooperative Board, the Osmond Community School Board, a director on the Plainview National Bank Board, a member of Osmond VFW, and Plainview American Legion Post 148. Jack was a devoted member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, serving many times on the church council.
He thoroughly enjoyed farming, caring for livestock, and conserving the land. He moved to Plainview in 1986, gradually retiring from farming.
His hobbies included playing golf, dancing, playing cards, and traveling. The highlight of his life was spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by Dorean, his wife of 61 years; three daughters, Nikki (Dan) Tunink of Randolph, Jann (Jerry) Drahota of Norfolk, and Jill Stueckrath of Omaha; a son, Dean (Stephanie) Stueckrath of Osmond; seven grandchildren, Mitchell Tunink, Tyler (Brooke) Tunink, Alicia Drahota, Jason (Jessie) Drahota, Brandi Stueckrath, James Stueckrath, and Krista Stueckrath; three great-grandchildren, Addison Drahota, and twins, Kaden and Macey Drahota; four brothers, Gene (Lois) of Plainview, Willis “Butch” (Norma) of Randolph, Roger (DonaRene) of Omaha, and Dennis “Dick” (Jeannine) of Norfolk; a sister, Carol (Wayne) Segulia, of Prior Lake, MN; a sister-in-law, Dixie Houston; a brother-in-law, Dennis (Jean) Albin; and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Lou and Ida Stueckrath of Plainview; brothers Donald, Norman and Lou, Jr.; brother-in-law Jack Houston; and an infant son, James.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be designated to Plainview American Legion Post 148 or AseraCare Hospice Foundation at 1909 Vicki Lane, Suite 110, Norfolk, NE 68701.
