Gerald John Hanneman (Brunswick)

April 8, 1924 — December 12, 2012

Gerald John Hanneman was born April 8, 1924, in Antelope County Nebraska, to Clarence and Mabel (Kahler) Hanneman. This good and faithful servant was welcomed into everlasting life on Wednesday, December 12, 2012, at 8:40 p.m., at the Norfolk Veterans Home.

Gerald attended rural District #61, Antelope County, Nebraska, and Brunswick High School, graduating in 1941from Plainview High School. He farmed with his father and brother, Vernon, for many years. Gerald served two years in the U. S. Navy during WW II in the South Pacific, serving on Amphibious Personnel Attack ship APA 169 on the Pacific Ocean during his tour of duty. Gerald was discharged on May 23, 1946.

He married Dorothy A. North on July 13, 1952, in the Brunswick Congregational Church, Brunswick, Nebraska, officiated by Rev. Clarence Hanscom. To this union, five children were born, Gail Gene, Roger Dean, Marcus John, Candace Kay, and Craig Steven. He was also ‘dad’ to two foreign exchange students, Franz Weber from Bonn, Germany, now residing in Kona, Hawaii, and Foekje (Bajema) Schavemaker from Workum, Netherlands, and now resides in Heerenven, Netherlands.

He continued to farm the land he grew up on and sell Rob-See-Co and Golden Harvest seed corn. Gerald and Dorothy moved to Plainview in 1991, however Gerald continued to farm the family land, fully retiring in 2005. He served as Commander of American Legion Post 148, Brunswick, Nebraska, and later served as Commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5330, Plainview, Nebraska. He enjoyed attending his children's activities and playing cards and hunting. He had resided at the Norfolk Veterans Home, having suffered several strokes, in 2006. A stroke in June 2007 created paralysis of the right side and limited speech. But, his smile could not be contained!

Gerald is survived by his sister, Eileen Albin, Plainview, children, Gail, and his spouse, Susan; Marcus, Candace, and her spouse, Tom Ristow, all of Lincoln; and Craig, and his spouse, Rhonda, of West Point. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren, Laura, Elliott and Garrett Hanneman, children of Gail and Susan; Elizabeth (Hanneman) and her spouse, Cody Kromarek, and Richard Hanneman, children of Roger and Peggy; Nathaniel, Andrew, James, Thaddaeus, and Simon Ristow, children of Candace and Tom; and Jenna, and son Tucker, Tyler, Marissa, and Brett Hanneman, children of Craig and Rhonda. He is also survived by four great grandchildren. Gerald was preceded in death by son, Roger, Parents, Clarence and Mabel; brother, Vernon, and sister, Lenora Foster.

Funeral services will be held at the Plainview Congregational Church, Plainview, Nebraska, on Monday, December 17, 2012, 10:00 a.m. Internment after the funeral service, and following a drive to the farm near Brunswick, will be at Pleasant View Cemetery, Plainview, Nebraska.
