Marie Alice (Lerum) Newman was born on May 18, 1920 in Plainview, NE. She was the fifth of five children born to Christian Junior and Alice (Hansen) Lerum. She graduated from Plainview High School in 1938 and from Clarkson Memorial School of Nursing in Omaha.
She married Virgil Newman on September 22 1940 in Rockport, Missouri in a double ring ceremony with good friends Lloyd and Margaret Bonge. Margaret and Marie were life-long friends. She lived most of her life in the Plainview area and worked many years as a nurse for Doctors M. A. Johnson, Kopp, Peters, and Massie at the Plainview Medical Clinic retiring in the early 1990’s.
Marie was an avid golfer, gardener, and card player who enjoyed playing bridge with her friends and family. She loved red roses, NE football, Willie Nelson music, pictures of her grandkids, shopping, and competing with her nice neighbor Peg Albin for the best backyard tomatoes. Her niece, Diann Frahm, was much appreciated. Diann, for many years, would deliver a poinsettia at Christmas and a gift for her birthday.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Virgil in 1975; three sisters, Ellen in 1987, Luella in 1993, Lucille in 2012; and a brother, Harold, in 1979. Her pioneering grandfather, Christian Lerum, is credited with naming Plainview.
Survivors include her children; Raymond and wife Connie of Homer, NE., Mike and wife Tina of Citrus Heights, CA., Jerry and wife Connie of Flower Mound, TX., and Mark and wife Julie of Folsom, CA.; her grandchildren Sheila Polomis, Craig Newman, Tim and Jeremy Newman, and Josh and Cassie Newman; and four great grandchildren.
Our family would like to thank the staff at the Plainview Manor for the excellent care they provided. Special thanks to Hospice for the helpful and compassionate care given to mom and family during her final weeks.
