Mabel L. Westrom (Plainview)

August 17, 1921 — July 22, 2013

Funeral services for Mabel L. Westrom, age 91, of Plainview will be held Friday, July 26, 2013, at the United Methodist Church in Plainview. Pastor Lana Fong will be officiating. Visitation will be from 5PM-8PM, Thursday, at the Ashburn Funeral Home, with Eastern Star Services at 7:30 P.M. and P.E.O. services following. Mabel passed away July 22nd, 2013 at her home in Plainview.

Mabel Westrom was born August 17th, 1921, the youngest child of Henry and Elcy (Fulton) Kuhl, on the Knox County family farm, northeast of Plainview. She was baptized and confirmed at the Plainview Congregational Church.

Mabel attended District 141, Rural School in Knox County and high school in Plainview, graduating in 1939. She then attended the Stanford School of Business in Washington, D.C. After college she was employed at the Naval Ordinance Laboratory, Navy Yard, Washington, D.C.
On May 7, 1942, Mabel Kuhl and Philip Westrom were married by Rev. Robin Gould of the Francis Asbury Methodist church in Washington, D.C. The couple made their home at Buffalo, New York. To this union two sons were born, Duane and Warren, both at Buffalo, New York. They lived in Buffalo until 1946, when they moved to the Westrom family farm southwest of Plainview. They farmed there for thirty-four years. In 1979, they retired and moved into Plainview.

Mabel became a member of the Crawford Valley Church. She was a Sunday school teacher, Superintendent of the Sunday school, president of the United Methodist Women for several years, member of the choir and pianist most of the time for eighteen years. After moving to Plainview, she transferred her membership to the Plainview Methodist church and United Methodist Women. Mabel also was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, serving as a Past worthy Matron and Mother Advisor of Order Rainbow Girls for two years. She was also active in P.E.O, serving as several officers as well as President. Mabel enjoyed her family, community, traveling and outdoor activities.

Mabel is survived by her two sons, Duane and Margaret of Camarillo, California and Warren and Dottie of Plainview, Nebraska; three grandsons, Bill and Tracy of Fremont, Nebraska, Phillip and Jeanne of Everett, Washington, and Eric and Brittany of Ojai, California; three great-grandchildren, one sister, Dorothy A. Kuhl of Plainview, and a sister-in-law, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Phillip, her parents, four brothers, Leonard, Maurice, Everett, and Hubert and three sister-in-laws.
