Services for Richard Gubbels, 85, of Osmond will be held on Saturday, Sep. 7, 2013, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Osmond. Officiating the pastor, Father Mike Swanton. Concelebrant, Father John Andrews of Omaha. Deacon , Mr. Doug Tunink. Burial is in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Visitation: 5-8 Friday with Rosary at 7:30 at the church. Pallbearers were Ray Gubbels, Duane Gubbels, John Gubbels, Mat Gubbels, Jim Peschel, Tom Peschel, Ron Pint, Dan Pint, Steve Pint, Maynard Smith and Greg Smith. Honorary pallbearers were Richard’s 17 nieces.
Rita Aschoff accompanied cantor Jim Peschel and St. Mary’s choir which led the congregational singing of “Be Not Afraid,” “Gift Of Finest Wheat,” “Seeds Scattered and Sown,” “Blest Are They” and “How Can I Keep From Singing?” Richard’s brother, Norbert Gubbels, placed the crucifix on the casket while his sisters, Mary Ann Peschel, Lavine Pint and Arlene Smith, placed the pall and served as gift bearers. Communion minister was Duane Gubbels and lector was Laurie Gubbels. Mass servers were Scot and Paul Gubbels.
Richard Matt Gubbels was born to Matt and Cecilia (Krienert) Gubbels July 27, 1928, on the family farm one mile south of Osmond, and lived there his entire life. He attended St. Mary’s Catholic School through the eighth grade. Richard was very devoted to his Catholic faith, had never in his 85 years missed Sunday Mass and rarely missed weekday Mass. He was a members of St. Mary’s Church where he served as usher and trustee. He was a member of St. Joseph Court Catholic Order of Foresters. Richard donated generously to his favorite charities and donated land for the Catholic Spirit Radio tower northwest of Osmond. Richard did a lot of traveling in his younger years, visiting Rome and the sites of the Battle of the Bulge and Bastone, the latter two where his brother, Norbert, served during World War II. He made seven or eight trips to Brownsville, TX, helping deliver 350 barrels of supplies which were then transported to Nicaragua where Father Robert Spader served in the missions.
Survivors include a brother, Norbert Gubbels; sisters Mary Ann Peschel, Lavine and husband Jerry Pint and Arlene and husband Mel Smith; 11 nephews, 17 nieces and special friends Bill and Christina Steffen.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Jerome and wife JoAnn Gubbels; sister-in-law
Rita Gubbels and brother-in-law Frank Peschel.
Memorials are suggested to St. Mary’s Catholic School.
