Funeral Services for Dorothy Elizabeth Zuhlke will be held Saturday, December 27th, 2014 at 10:30 A.M. at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Plainview. Visitation will be from 4-8 P.M. on Friday, December 26th, 2014 at the Our Saviors Lutheran Church. Burial will be in the Danish Cemetery in rural Plainview.
Dorothy Elizabeth (Goedeker) Zuhlke was born on a farm 3 miles north of Winnetoon, NE referred to as the Kremeier place on July 11, 1926. She was a daughter of Herman & Sophie (Ellerbruch) Goedeker. Dorothy was the 4th child & oldest girl in a family of six children. Brothers included William (Bill), Delbert, Allen, & Donnie whom are all deceased. She is survived by her younger sister, Irene. She attended school at District 14. After school she worked as a hired girl at different places and helped her mother. Then she took a job as a waitress (riding the train from Winnetoon to Plainview) at a café owned by John & Alta Logan for nearly 2 years . The Logan’s introduced Dorothy to a young man by the name of Herbert Zuhlke, who had just returned from the army.
On March 31, 1946, they were married by the Rev. Larson at the Bethesda Lutheran Church in Winnetoon. Herb’s sister, Edna,& Dorothy’s brother, Allen, stood up with them when they were united in marriage. They spent their entire married life of 68 years on 3 of the different farms Herbert had grown up on south of Brunswick. She was currently residing at the Golden Living Center in Neligh.
Dorothy & her husband, Herb, were blessed with seven sons, Norman, Keith, Eugene, Dean, Alden, Jerry & David. Dorothy was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church of rural Brunswick until it merged with another church & became Our Savior’s Lutheran of Plainview.
Dorothy was well known for her ability to set a table for extras if they happened to show up at mealtimes & for her baking. She was doer, a caretaker of family, a mother & grandmother who was always there when someone needed her. She helped take care of many grandchildren over the years, washed a whole lot of clothes & fixed an abundant amount of meals. You were always welcome at her & Herb’s table.
Dorothy passed away on December 22, 2014 at the Golden Living Center in Neligh,at the age of 88 yrs, 5 mos. & 11 days. Dorothy is survived by all seven sons, Norman (Jane) & Eugene (Deborah) all of Brunswick, Keith (Debra) of Neligh, Dean (Gina) of Omaha, Alden (Lisa) of Plainview, Jerry (Rhonda) of Creighton & David of Crofton; seventeen grandsons, six granddaughters & 33 great grandchildren; Sister, Irene (Gene) Hague of Omaha and sister-in-law, Edna Raff of Lincoln.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert, on July 23, 2014; parents, Herman & Sophie Goedeker; brothers & sister-in-laws, William (Faye) Goedeker, Delbert (Rose) Goedeker, Allen (Dorus) Goedeker & Donald Goedeker & brother-in-law, Lester Raff.
