Alice Ilene Erwin , was born on December 15, 1921 to Edwin and Minnie (Bogenhagen) Weingartner. She was baptized in and later became a member of the Osmond Presbyterian church. Alice grew up on the family farm 3 1/2 miles west of Osmond and attended country school district 50, and graduated from Osmond High School in 1939. She enrolled in the Omaha Business school but her love was to be a teacher much like her older three sisters. Her older brother , Lowell , knew of her desire to teach and in the summer of 1941, before passing away from a ruptured appendix, he told his sister he was leaving her money to go to Wayne State if she wanted to. She honored her brothers dying offer. Alice later graduated with a 2 year degree from Wayne State College and began her career at District 29W in Pierce County. She taught there for two years and then later moved to Dixon, Nebraska, teaching lower elementary for the next 5 years.
While teaching in Dixon, Alice met Orpheus Erwin , a native Dixon farmer and found what she was really looking for in life. After , what Alice described as a (prolonged courtship) ,Orpheus proposed and they were married in the Osmond Presbyterian Church on April 3, 1949. They farmed in the Dixon area until 1952 when they moved to the family farm west of Osmond after Alices father passed away. Orpheus and Alice raised three children, Cheryl, Rodney, and Robert. While raising her family and helping with the dairy business , Alice found time to involve herself in community activities such as the Bit-of-Diversion Extension club and the United Methodists womens church organizations. A weekly outing with the ladies came on bowling nights where she bowled with the Dawson Dino's. Alice was an avid gardener, raising a huge garden of produce surrounded by rows of her favorite flowers.
Alice Loved to bake. Since she was the younger of the girls in her family, her job was to make the pies for the threshing crews. Pies were always abundant for all the family gatherings and church events. Alice used these baking skills while she worked as a cook at Osmond Community Schools. Alice became a member of the United Methodist Church after the merger of the Presbyterian and Methodist church's, and was an active Sunday School and Bible School teacher for many years. Alice was always a care giver, lovingly taking care of her mother and husband until their time of death. Alice spent the last 3 years in the Heritage of Bel Air Nursing home in Norfolk. She passed away January 21, at 93 years of age.
