He courageously fought stage four kidney cancer which was diagnosed in July, 2013.
Kent Lingenfelter was born January 2, 1950, in Plainview, NE, to Dale K. and Cleo (Albers) Lingenfelter. He was the New Year’s baby that year and received a baby bed and five gallons of ice cream from Baber’s Café. Kent was a big baby weighing over 9 1/2 pounds which prompted Dr. Johnson to say, ”Dale, you have your hired man.”
Kent attended District No. 75 from K-7th grade. He finished his education at Plainview Public Schools, graduating in May of 1968. He worked part time for four years for Wood Feeder’s Supply. He graduated from Wayne State College in 1972 with his bachelor’s degree in mathematics along with an earth science and physical education minor and coaching endorsement. He started teaching one day after his graduation at the Randolph Public Schools teaching science. That fall he taught junior high math at South Sioux City for one year. The following year he taught senior high math at Central City. In the spring of 1974, he returned to Plainview and pursued his passion for farming, first with his father and then on his own until his retirement in 2013. He and his father formed D & K Farms, Inc. and profitably raised livestock and farmed over 600 acres. Kent was honored in 1981 when he was selected as Farmer of the Year by the Plainview Jaycees.
On August 21, 1971, Kent married his high school sweetheart, Cheryl Hoffman, at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Plainview. They were the proud parents of Krista LaRayne, Kevin Dale, and Kyle Edward. Kent was well known for his love and devotion to his family, including his grandchildren, and the faithful attendance of their many activities.
Kent was baptized as an infant at the Plainview United Methodist Church and his church membership began in 1963 when he was confirmed by the Reverend Paul Johnson. He served as lay leader, council chair and on many other committees. He was a Sunday school teacher for six years. He enjoyed participating in fast-pitch softball, town-team basketball and the annual alumni basketball tournaments for many years. The more intense and competitive, the better for Kent.
Kent served on the Plainview School Board from 1992-1996. He worked at the local monthly Food Distribution Truck. He volunteered to manage the American Legion Burger nights this past winter for 11 weeks. Even though Kent was not a member of the American Legion, this was his way to honor his father, Dale, who was a member, and all the other veterans from Plainview.
Kent loved his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, his family, his church, the Plainview community and all kinds of sports.
Survivors include his wife, Cheryl, his daughter Krista (Billy) Siefker of Lincoln, his son Kevin (Kelly) Lingenfelter of Plainview, his son Kyle (Amanda) Lingenfelter of Lincoln, grandchildren Kyra, Nathan, and Ava Palm, Karter, Kohen, Kara, Korver, Landen, Logan, and Brynlee Lingenfelter, his sister Arlet Anderson of Burlington, IA, and sisters in law Linda Dunkel of Lansing, MI, Miki Petersen of Omaha, Pat Drummond of Omaha, Edye (Mark) Eichberger of Norfolk, many cousins, nieces and nephews.
