Bernadine Hannah Nelson was born on the farm three miles east
and 2 south of Royal November 28, 1928, the 2nd of five siblings born to August and Ella Nelson. She departed this life October 11, 2016 at the age Of 87 at her home in Neligh, NE.

Bernadine attended country school at district #78, and graduated
from Brunswick high school in 1945.

She accepted the Lord at a Bible camp when she was a teenager,
but, as with a lot of young people was not a totally committed Christian until several years later.

After graduation she went to the Norfolk Junior College one year,
worked as a secretary for a law firm, Hutton and Mueting in Norfolk. She worked at a variety of offices as secretary, attended Miltonvale Wesleyan College in Miltonvale, Kansas, where she met her future husband, Keith Hughes.

Keith and Bernadine were married in Brunswick September 9,
1949 at the home of her parents. The young couple left immediately for Lawrence, Kansas, where Keith was employed at a Heating and
Plumbing business. In 1952 they moved to Nebraska where they
farmed and raised livestock.

Five children were born to this union, Denny, Belinda, Randy,
Connie and Gary.

On December 29, 1964 Keith and Bernadine were involved in a
major car accident, which left them with what they always called,
'inconveniences.' Three churches were holding watch night services
that New Year's eve and praying for them. It was because of the
prayers God miraculously healed them, and they both lived to see their children raised, married, and grandchildren. Keith always said, "We are living on borrowed time." And they were, but God allowed them many good years together.

Keith was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1980, and with
medication lived a fruitful life many years, passing away in December 2005. Bernadine moved to Neligh in 2007.

She was preceded in death by husband, Keith, parents, August and Ella Nelson, twin sisters, Bethel and Berniece, and Beverly, sister Betty Sawyer.

Survivors include her five children Dennis and Donna Hughes of Royal, NE.; Belinda and Mike Riley of Kansas City, MO.; Randy and Juel Hughes of Royal, NE’ Connie Baker and friend Al Smoldt of Neligh, NE,; and Gary and Julie Hughes of Crofton, NE. 14 Grandchildren and 27 Great-Grandchildren.
