Funeral Services for Marilyn Scranton age 89 will be held at 10:00 am. Tuesday November 24th at the United Methodist Church in Plainview. Visitation for Marilyn will be from 4-8 PM. on Monday at the Ashburn Funeral Home in Plainview with burial in the Pleasant View Cemetery.
Marilyn Scranton of the Plainview and Brunswick area died Friday, November 20, 2009 at the Golden Living Center in Neligh, Nebraska. She was born May 18, 1920 in Bethany, Nebraska to Orris and Blanche (Eddenfield) Wood . She graduated from Plainview High School in 1936 after which she began teaching country schools in Pierce, Antelope, and Knox counties. She continued her education while teaching, and received her Bachelor’s Degree from Wayne State College in 1977. .
Marilyn married Wilbur (Bill) Scranton May 21, 1938 in Falls City, Nebraska. Marilyn and Bill farmed at various locations in Antelope, Pierce, and Knox counties. They moved to Plainview in 1953 and Marilyn taught in country schools, and Bill worked at the Plainview Power Plant and farmed. They moved to Brunswick in 1964 where they operated Scranton Grocery and Marilyn continued to teach.
After retiring from many years of teaching she volunteered her time by tutoring children. She also taught Sunday School for many years and was always very involved in her church life. Other than family, Marilyn always took pride in her many achievements with the hundreds of children she taught. She had great satisfaction when former students would relate their fond memories of her being their teacher and how much they had learned and grown.
Marilyn is survived by her sons and their wives: Lyle and Deborah Scranton of Grand Island, Nebraska; Larry and Barbara Scranton of Lincoln, Nebraska; seven grandchildren, and eleven great grandchildren. She is survived by many nieces and nephews and other extended family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Wilbur (Bill), her brothers: Eldon Robert, Lyndon Orris, Wendell William, LaMoyne Russell, Willard Arthur, Garland Perry, Vernon Eddenfield, Robert M. La Follette, and Orlyn Elden.
