Funeral services for Charles (Chick) Rethmeier age 98 of Neligh were at 11:00 am Saturday, August 1, 2009 at Laurel Hill Cemetery Neligh. Pallbearers were Charles Rethmeier, Heidi Rethmeier, Brian Rethmeier, Kristie Vetter, George Kretke, and Clark Mattingly. There was Visitation celebration of life of Chick Rethmeier from 9:00 to 11:00 am Saturday, August 1, 2009 at Snider Memorial Funeral Home in Neligh. Burial was in the Laurel Hill cemetery with Military rites by Neligh American Legion Post #172. Chick passed away Tuesday evening at the Golden Living Center in Neligh. Chick, the son of George Theodore Rethmeier and Minnie (Kessler) Rethmeier was born August 24, 1910 in Dunlap, Iowa. When he was in the 8th grade he, along with his parents and older sister, Rose and older brother, Paul, moved to Neligh where the family was engaged in ranching and cattle feeding. He graduated from Neligh High School in 1928 and was employed by the Triangle Cattle Company of which his father was an owner. The Cattle were raised on the Powder Horn ranch in Cherry County and shipped by railroad to Neligh. After offloading the cattle in Neligh they were herded through town to the feedlot north of Neligh. In 1931 he married Myrtle Miller of Neligh. They founded and operated the Neligh Livestock Sale Barn north of Neligh until 1954. During the 1943-45 war years Chick was in the Marines and saw combat in the South Pacific with the 1st Marine Division. After the sale barn was sold in 1954, he and Myrtle continued to operate an auction service and the Clearwater Auction Store until in their 80�s. In 2008 Chick and Myrtle celebrated their 77th Wedding Anniversary. Chick was an avid golfer and at one time was the Antelope Country Club champion. In one tournament he shot a 28 on the 9 hole course. Chick died July 28, at the age of 98, at the Golden Living Center in Neligh. He was preceded in death by his wife, Myrtle, his parents and sister and brother. Survivors include son, Ted of Neligh, and son, Ken and his wife, Judy of Loveland Colorado; six grandchildren; and thirteen great-grandchildren.
