Lois Darlene Johnson

Funeral Service for Lois D. Johnson age 92 of Oakdale, Nebraska will be 10:30 am Thursday, October 22, 2015 at Oakdale United Methodist Church in Oakdale, Nebraska with Pastor Michael Davis, Officiating. Burial will be in Oakdale Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 7 Wednesday, October 21, 2015 at Beyer Snider Memorial Funeral Home in Neligh, Nebraska. Lois passes away on Sunday, October 18, 2015 at Antelope Memorial Hospital in Neigh. Beyer Snider Memorial Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. Lois Johnson, daughter of Fred and Ethel Holmes Johnson, was born April 19, 1923 at the family farm home west of Oakdale, Nebraska. She attended Oakdale Public School, graduating in 1940. She attended Midland College at Fremont, Nebraska, receiving her bachelor's degree in 1944.
Lois was recruited as a civilian employee of the Signal Corps of the War Department, serving as a decoder of Japanese sea messages. When the war was over in August of 1945, she returned home and began her 40 years of teaching. She taught, primarily, High School math and science, at Crofton High School, Long Pine High School, Atkinson High School, NorthPlatte High School and Neligh High School, Norfolk High School, and Elkhorn Valley High School at Tilden, retiring in 1985.
During her teaching years she attended summer sessions at Midland, American University in Washington, D.C., and the University of Nebraska at Lincoln obtaining her Master's Degree from the University of Nebraska in 1953.
She was active with others in restoring the Antelope County Historical Society which had been established as the Pioneers-Antelope County Historical Society in 1886 and allowed to become inactive after the death of A.J. Leach, its founder.
Lois was a long-time member of Delta Kappa Gamma, women teacher's international organization, serving in many capacities in that organization. She helped to establish and served for many years as president of the Oakdale Cemetery Auxiliary. She led the drive to enlarge and refurbish the Oakdale Public Library and establish the Library Foundation, serving as its treasurer for many years.
Lois was baptized in the Oakdale United Brethren Church and attended its Sunday school and church until it was United with the Oakdale United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a baby sister and brother Wayne.
Survived by sister-in-law, Ingrid Johnson of Albuquerque, NM. Nephew, John Johnson of Albuquerque, NM and niece, Nina Johnson of Albuquerque, NM. Grandniece, Kellan Mahoney-Chavez and husband, Alfred Chavez and their children, Ava Lynn and Barrett of Albuquerque, NM.
