Arleen Rose Walker Kuhl was born September 28, 1928 in Sioux City, Iowa to Chester and Gladys (Seitz) Walker. She died peacefully April 7, 2026 at Plainview Manor in Plainview Nebraska.
Arleen graduated from Norfolk Public High School and was elected the Milestone Girl for the class of 1946. She graduated from what was then Norfolk Junior College. She taught 3rd grade at Sidney and Neligh before coming to Plainview in 1951. She caught the eye of bachelor-about-town, Myron Kuhl, whose nephew Richard Kuhl was in her 3rd grade class.
Arleen and Myron were married June 22, 1952 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Norfolk. They settled in Plainview and raised two daughters together. During those years she put her teaching credentials to good use substitute teaching, teaching Sunday school and Bible school, and serving as Girl Scout leader. She was active in all manner of activities from her church, the community, Eastern Star where she held every office at least once, and many social activities. She loved to play golf with her life-long friend Nanci Lingenfelter. She was the ladies golf league champion more than once. She was also a prolific bridge player. Her home was always open to family and friends. When the girls were in high school there was always a skillet of sloppy joes and a pan of brownies available for anyone who had to catch a pep club bus. After the game there was always a frozen pizza in the freezer. Arleen often said she attended school sports events only to watch the cheerleaders, but when Paula showed promise as a track athlete, she and Myron never missed a meet.
When her nest emptied, Arleen became involved in the Order of Eastern Star at the state Grand Chapter level. She rose through the ranks and served as Worthy Grand Matron from 1983 to 1984. She continued to serve in various capacities and travelled extensively around the state for the next 30 years. The many friends she made along the way were truly a “Grand Family.” She was accompanied on step of that journey by her faithful friend, Diann Frahm, who has remained steadfast to the very end.
Arleen and Myron were the most devoted of grandparents to their grandchildren Megan and Michael Schwarten, spending many happy hours babysitting. Arleen often dropped what she was doing to go to Wayne on short notice to provide childcare when needed. She loved every minute of it. Michael delighted in the fact that she always told him he was her “favorite” grandson.
In later years, she and Maureen became travel and dinner companions, sharing numerous mother/daughter trips and meals at Mary’s Café and Green Gables. She enjoyed the generous companionship of Duane Fudge for several years. He shared his family with her and she adopted them as her own.
Throughout her life she always maintained a candy dish in her home, a habit she inherited from her own mother. The candy dish went with her when she entered the nursing home in 2022. She derived immense amusement from the fact that the staff always knew where the candy stash was kept.
She is preceded in death by her husband Myron, her parents, son-in-law Mike Bivens, granddaughter Megan Schwarten, brother Mark (Eula) Walker, and brother-in-law Gordon (Hilda) Kuhl.
Arleen is survived by her daughters Maureen Bivens and Paula (Mike Behne) Schwarten, grandson Michael Schwarten, and nieces and nephews.
