Funeral Services for Barbara Ann Young, 84, of Plainview, will be held at 10:30am, Saturday, July 13, 2024, at Peace Evangelical Church in Norfolk, with a visitation at 9:30am. Pastor Clark Jenkinson will be officiating the service. A lunch will follow in the Peace fellowship hall. Interment will be held at Pleasant View Cemetery in Plainview at 2pm for those who wish to attend. The visitation will from 5 to 7pm at Ashburn Funeral Home in Plainview on Friday, July 12th. She passed away on Saturday, July 6, 2024, in the early morning hours at CHI Health Plainview. She had been surrounded by family and caring hospital staff in the preceding days.

Barbara Ann (Miller) Young was born April 3,1940 to Ronald and Dorothy (Chase) Miller in Plainview, Nebraska. She went to District 99 rural school and then attended Plainview High School where she graduated in 1957. She was baptized, confirmed and raised in the United Methodist Church in Plainview and was active in Sunday School, youth group, and evening circle. Most recently, Barb was an active members of Peace Evangelical Church in Norfolk, where she enjoyed Sunday School, close friends, and the many social gatherings.

Barbara married Eugene Keith Young on January 5th, 1958, at the Plainview Methodist Church. They were married for 66 years and lived in rural Antelope county on the farm that had been her childhood home. She lived there all her life with the exception of three years. Her grandfather purchased the home in 1918 and Barb and Gene purchased the home from her father in 1965.

Barbara and Eugene Young had four daughters: Debra Ann, Nancy Kay, Juliana, and Sheila Michele. They also had a foreign exchange daughter from the Netherlands, Mattie, who lived with them in 1988-89. They visited her in Holland as well, and she has made several trips back to her American home.

Barbara, also called “Bobbi” in her youth, was a member of Chapter FE, P.E.O., Northeast Nebraska Rock and Mineral Society, Bluebirds Across Nebraska (BAN), and served as Executive Secretary for the Highway 20 Association. She was also a member of the Plainview Area Health Foundation at one time. Barb and Gene owned and ran the Ski Hi Drive in 1963 and operated it for three years while continuing their farming operation. They also owned Unique Antique and Stuff in downtown Plainview for five years. They received the Outstanding Citizen Award in 1991 and Winter Texan of the Year Award in 1995.

Barbara enjoyed many hobbies: scrapbooking, genealogy, writing, reading, fishing, hunting rocks, gardening, making items with gourds and seashells, making jelly, and canning produce for her family. Her grandkids and great grandkids were her pride and joy. Each one was very precious to her and made her proud.

Barb and Gene enjoyed time with family and friends at their trailer on the river, their backyard pool, and enjoyed traveling to many places throughout the states and abroad. They really enjoyed their time in later years being Winter Texans on Padre Island.

Barbara leaves behind a legacy of love in her husband Eugene; her four daughters: Debra Michaelson, Nancy Compton, Juliana (Leon) Botha of Plainview and Sheila (Clark) Jenkinson of Stanton; Six grandchildren: Brian (Selena) Ickler, Joe Ickler (fiancé Mandy), Derrick Hoffart all of Plainview; Miranda (fiancé Parker) Hoffart of Lawton, Iowa, Caleb Jenkinson and Shelby Jenkinson of Stanton; twelve great-grandchildren; and many beloved family and friends.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Ronald and Dorothy Miller, her brother Curtis Miller, parents-in-law Vernard and Vera Young, and beloved grandparents Alfreda Chase and David Franklin Miller.

God has been good to Barbara and she has felt blessed. She asked God many times to continue to bless her husband and family.
