A lifetime resident of Osmond, Delmer C. Neubauer, 97, died on August 15, 2018 at Saint Joseph Rehabilitation and Care Center in Norfolk. Services will be August 18 at 11:00AM at the United Methodist Church in Osmond. Visitation with be at the church on Friday, August 17 from 4:30-7:00PM.
Delmer Cornelius Neubauer was born on September 16, 1920 on a farm north of Osmond to Leo and Ella (Backhaus) Neubauer. He attended Osmond Public School and by the time Delmer was a teenage, the Great Depression and drought created hard times. He completed the eighth grade and began working for Bruegman and Reed grocery store in Osmond.
In 1939, Delmer was selected to serve in the Civilian Conservation Corps in Winside. The CCC was a government work relief program for unemployed men. There he learned to operate road construction equipment, a skill he would use throughout his lifetime.
Then came World War II. Delmer served in the US Army in the 11 th Armored Division 22nd Tank Battalion from October 1942 – November 1945. In European Theatre, he drove tank for Headquarter Commanders. He was awarded a Bronze Star, The Oak Leaf Cluster and a Purple Heart.
After the war, he returned home to begin employment with Theisen Brothers’ road construction. This career would last more than 50 years and worked for four generations of Cap Theisen’s family.
On November 24, 1946, Delmer married Doris Lingenfelter. The Neubauer’s had three children, Janet, Ann and Marvin. He was member of the United Osmond United Methodist Church and lifetime member of the American Legion and VFW. He was as a volunteer fireman in Osmond for 64 years.
During retirement, Delmer enjoyed traveling, camping, participating with the United Methodist Volunteers In Mission program, being a “Winter Texan”, having coffee at Tiger Tavern, woodworking, listening to polka, making his “Tin Men” and always sharing a story.
The past two years Delmer was a resident at St Joseph’s Rehabilitation and Care Center. The employees and residents quickly became his extended family.
Survived by daughter Ann (Gary) Steckelberg of Norfolk. Daughter in law, Sue Neubauer of Lincoln. Son in law, Warren (Joan) Schwanebeck of Genoa. Brother Leo and wife Pat Neubauer of Centerville, IA. Sister in law Janis Lingenfelter of Plainview. Delmer was blessed with 7 Grandchildren, 13 Great Grandchildren and 6 Great-Great Grandchildren. And many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents. His wife Doris (1993), Daughter Janet (2008) and son Marvin (2015). His sisters, Leola Botsford, Evelyn Stegelman, Helen Lindquist and Donna Bell Galvin and his friend Joyce Rohlfs (2010).
