Glen Bonge, 93, died August 2, 2018 at the Norfolk Veterans Home. His memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday August 10 th at the Congregational Church in Plainview, NE.
Glen was born in Creighton NE on March 5, 1925 to George and Ethel Bonge. His family later moved to a farm north of Plainview where he graduated from high school in 1943. He joined the Merchant Marines and traveled around the world twice. He then enlisted in the Army and served in occupied Japan until 1948. Upon his return home, he and his brother Lloyd started Bonge Brothers ditching service. Glen later formed his own company focusing on tile drainage land development. His company worked with farmers throughout Nebraska for over 50 years. As part of his business, Glen was most proud of having employed hundreds of local young men giving many of them their first job opportunity.
Glen married Evelyn Backer of Randolph in 1950. They celebrated their 68 th anniversary on June 2 nd . During their life together, they lived in both Plainview and Norfolk and raised two sons, Tim and Dan.
Glen was a passionate outdoorsman throughout his life. He believed strongly in land conservation and preservation of wildlife habitat. He was an active member and director of the Elkhorn Valley chapter of Pheasants Forever. In 2006, he was the recipient of the state’s Pheasants Forever Master Conservationist of the Year award.
Glen is survived by: wife, Evelyn; son, Dan (Deb) Bonge; granddaughter, Meryl Bonge; grandson, Nolan Bonge; brother, Larry.
He was preceded in death by his son, Tim; brothers: Evert and Lloyd. Friday’s memorial service will celebrate the lives of both Glen and his son Tim (lost at sea in 1985).
