Memorial services for Lois Mae (Friedrich) Huebner of Plainview will be held on Saturday, December 3, at 11:00 a.m. Pastor John Carrier will officiate. There will be a luncheon following the service at Zion Lutheran Church.

Lois Mae (Friedrich) Huebner passed away at the Plainview Manor on November 1st, All Saints’ Day, at the age of 101 years and seven months. A private family committal service was held November 5th with burial at Pleasant View Cemetery at Plainview. Pall Bearers were Nathan and Preston Schwanebeck, David Schwanebeck, Brian and Samuel Thomas and Damon Thomas.

Lois was born on the family farm northwest of Plainview on March 19th, 1921. She was the second oldest of 5 children born to John and Edith (Thompsen) Friedrich.

Lois was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Plainview.  She attended District 51 country school through 7th grade, grade 8 at Zion Lutheran School and graduated from Plainview High School in 1938.

After taking correspondence courses in secretarial sciences, Lois spent all of her working years doing secretarial and bookkeeping jobs, most recently in Plainview in the 1970’s for Plainview High School and Plainview National Bank.

Lois spent her first 18 years and her last 54 years living in Plainview.

Her first “wonderlust for travel” took her to Washington, D.C. at 19 where she worked for the federal government for 6 years. While living in the Walther League Hospice, a boarding house for young single Lutherans, she met her future husband Alfred Huebner. Alfred, also a native Nebraskan, was working in Washington D.C. prior to joining the Navy during WWII. They were married June 2,1946 at Zion Lutheran Church in Plainview.

Al’s work with the government took them to Denver and later to Las Cruces, New Mexico.  During those years, daughters Susan,Yolanda and Mary were born. A desire to return to their farming roots brought the family back to North Platte, Nebraska in the 1950’s. Al worked for a farmer there and then they moved to Hershey, Al’s hometown, where they lived on a farm they rented.  In 1968 the opportunity came to purchase Lois’ family farm outside of Plainview, Sunny Slope Farm.  After 28 years of living on the farm, Al and Lois celebrated their 50th anniversary in June of 1996. Following Al’s death in July of that year, Lois moved into Plainview and lived in her home until at the age of 93 she moved to Assisted Living and then the Plainview Manor.

Lois enjoyed manor activities, especially painting. When the Lutheran pastor would come for the weekly service, her strong soprano voice could be heard.  She looked forward to Wanda Retzlaff entertaining the residents with her piano playing!

Lois was active in choir, Lutheran Women’s Missionary League and Extension clubs.  She enjoyed cooking, collecting recipes and playing cards. Lois and Al enjoyed traveling to see family in Nebraska and around the country. Having a daughter and son-in-law and other relatives in Plainview to visit was an added joy!

Keeping in touch with family and friends kept Lois busy as she sent out birthday cards, letters and 100+ Christmas cards yearly. The last ten or more years, her daughters would help her.

Lois was preceded in death by her husband Alfred, and parents John and Edith Friedrich. Sisters and husbands Jean and Roger Gosswein, Bernice and Elmer Holst.  Brother Gerald and his wife Ila Friedrich, and brother Edward Friedrich. Granddaughters Stephanie and Rebecca Schwanebeck, and son-in-law Gene Thomas.
