Lola Mae Bruns was born on December 5, 1927 and passed away at The Plainview Manor on January 4, 2022, at the age of 94. She was the daughter of Matthias Mohnen and Ida Leidrich from White Lake, South Dakota. Lola Mae graduated from White Lake High School and then entered the Normal Program at The Teacher’s College in Mitchell, SD. Her first teaching position was in a one room country school, teaching K-8 near White Lake, and followed that assignment teaching near the Bruns Homestead at Plankinton, both in South Dakota in 1949.
Lola Mae Mohnen was married to Terrance Leo Bruns of Plankinton, SD in, 1949, and they were among three sisters who married three brothers, creating triple cousins. The Terrance and Lola Bruns Union produced seven children including Theodore (Ted), Ida, Iva, Roger, Fran, Carla, and Vernon.
In 1965 the Bruns Family moved to Plainview, Nebraska where Terry did farm work and in addition to raising the family, they both became very active members of the St. Paul’s Parish.
When their kids got older Lola began working at the local bakery and before lunch would help prepare lunches for children at the public school. That led her to taking classes at UNL to become the head cook where she planned the meals, supervised their cooking, and saw to their being eaten. Toward the end of her career, Lola Mae received the inaugural “Employee of the Year Award,” in the Plainview Community. After retiring she helped the elderly with cleaning and their everyday tasks.
Among Lola’s talents were sewing, quilting, crocheting, embroidering, baking, arts and crafts, reading, and playing cards. Her family’s favorite card game was pinochle. If you played cards with Terrance and Lola, then you needed to pay attention and stick to the rules as competition could become heated with mis-played cards or inattention. She was in it to win it. When Lola became a grandmother, in order to play with the little ones, her preference shifted to the card game, Golf. Lola Bruns is proceeded in death by her husband, Terrance, son, Ted, her brothers and sisters, cousins, and grandson, SFG. Kyle Ray O’Nele. She is survived by Ida Bruns of Central City, NE, Iva Burnett of Julesburg, CO, Roger Bruns of Wisner, NE, Fran Bruns of Firestone, CO, Carla Murray of Culbertson, NE, and Vernon Bruns of Jamestown, ND, seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
