On April 6, 1939 in Plainview, Nebraska, Theodore and Esther (Hansen) Johnson joyfully completed their family with the birth of Marilyn Ann. Her lifelong journey of faith began with her baptism on April 23, 1939, and deepened with her confirmation at Bethany Lutheran Church on July 5, 1953.

Marilyn attended school in Plainview and graduated with the class of 1956. She went on to attend business college in Omaha for one year before working at International Harvester until 1959. On May 10, 1958 she was united in marriage to Richard Huston and to this union were three cherished daughters, Robin, Jodi, and Beth. Together they resided on the family farm near Brunswick.

From 1975-1977, Marilyn worked at Ashburn Ceramic before beginning a long and meaningful career at Plainview Community Hospital. Over her 37 years of dedicated service, she played a vital role in the Hospital Foundation and was honored with the Caring and Kindness Award in 1998, a testament to the compassion and generosity she shared with others every day.

On May 27, 1983, Marilyn married Al Parmenter. Together they shared a love of square dancing, golfing, traveling across the United States, and most of all, time spent with their children and grandchildren.

Marilyn had a strong sense of fairness and humility. Her greatest pet peeve was people who thought that they were better than others - she firmly believed that God created all people as equals. She had the biggest heart and loved unconditionally and wholeheartedly. Her faith never wavered, no matter what obstacles came her way. She was the most compassionate soul, embodying grace, kindness, and unending patience.

Marilyn loved spending time with her Red Hat Club and beloved friends; whether gathered around a card table, sharing stories over coffee, or simply enjoying each other’s company.

Throughout her life, Marilyn was deeply involved in her community, generously giving her time and talents to a variety of groups and committees. She especially enjoyed volunteering at the Klown Museum and was a devoted advocate for Robin. One of her proudest accomplishments was helping establish the first home for individuals with disabilities in Norfolk, Nebraska. She was also a dedicated supporter of the Plainview Foundation, the Highlights for Plainview Hospital, and the Plainview Manor Foundation. A faithful and active member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, she participated in the women’s group and Bible study, and served on the church council for six years-making history as the first woman ever elected to the council.

Marilyn’s greatest joy in life was being a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She had a special bond with each of her daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, staying closely connected with every one of them. Whether it was cheering from the stands, attending school activities, or simply spending quality time together, usually around a competitive board or card game, Marilyn made it a priority to be present in their lives. Her love, support, and constant encouragement were gifts she gave freely, and they will be cherished forever.

She leaves behind a family who greatly adored and admired her, including her three daughters: Robin Huston of Plainview; Jodi (Bill) Whitten of Norfolk, NE; and Beth (Wayne) Hansen of Sterling, NE. She was blessed with six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren: Megan (Brandon) Schaaf, Blake and Madelynn; Katlinn (Robert) Sullivan, McKenna and Keagan; Matthew (Britney) Whitten, Huston, Amelia, and Charlotte; Kyle (Jessica) Hansen and Easton; Amy (Steve) Jensen, Henry and Hunter; Kari (James) Gray, Georgia and Maggie. Marilyn is also survived by her sister, Elaine Carpenter of Creighton, NE, and sister-in-law Wanda (Clint) Post of Plainview, NE. She is lovingly remembered by her stepchildren: Mike (Valerie) Parmenter of New Boston, NH and Leann Wiley of Omaha, NE, along with four step-grandchildren, as well as many loving nieces and nephews.

While Marilyn will be missed immensely, she is now reunited with those who preceded her in death, including her parents; her husbands, Richard and Al; sister and brother-in-law Ferne (Darold) Rasmussen; brothers-in-law Dale Carpenter and Marvin Foster; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Betty (Bob) Cressman.
