Services for Marvin A. Sorensen, 81, of Plainview will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday March 26 th at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Plainview with burial at the Pleasant View Cemetery in Plainview and Rev. Donna Fonner officiating. Visitation will be on Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Church under the direction of Ashburn Funeral Home.
He died Saturday, March 23, 2019, at the Plainview Hospital after a brief illness.
Marvin was born on November 30, 1937 south of Plainview to Albert and Reba (Holmes) Sorensen. He was baptized and confirmed at Stark Valley Methodist Church south of Plainview.
Marvin lived in the Plainview area his entire life, working for local farmers, Home Oil Company, and Walton Feed before he started farming in 1968. He married Bernita Oltjenbruns on June 21, 1959 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Osmond. Marvin was an active member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, involved in many church activities and council positions. He was active in the community serving on various boards and committees, including the Plainview Creamery, Plainview Farmers Union, Danish Brotherhood, and FSA. Marvin was a farmer and loved being on the farm, going for drives, having coffee with friends, and following Nebraska football. One of his greatest joys was being with his family and friends, sharing a good laugh, and attending his grandchildren’s activities.
Survivors include his children Michael (Deb) Sorensen, Plainview; Joel (Cynthia) Sorensen, Bonner Springs, Kansas; Beth (Darin) Petersen, Stanton; Ruth (Jon) Vyhlidal, Fremont; grandchildren Nicole Sorensen (Noel Voborny), Rachel Sorensen, Stephanie Sorensen, Bret (Sara) Sorensen, Monica (Nick) Holle, Steven (Casandra) Petersen, Jason Petersen, Cody Vyhlidal, and Caitlyn Vyhlidal; great grandsons Austin and Logan Sorensen; sister Berdeen Joyce; brother-in-law Kenneth (Earline) Oltjenbruns; sister-in-law’s Marvene Oltjenbruns and Vernetta Oltjenbruns; as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Bernita, and brother-in-law’s Loel Joyce, Hubert (Mary Lou) Oltjenbruns, Roland Oltjenbruns, and Byron Oltjenbruns.
Lori Koehler will be the organist, and congregational hymns will be “Amazing Grace”, “On Eagle's Wings”, “Great is Thy Faithfulness”, and “Just a Closer Walk with Thee”.
