Stephen “Steve” Paul Borin 69, passed away Friday June 3 rd at Randolph Colonial Manor.  Steve was born February 16 th , 1953 in Denver CO. to Thomas Harold “Hal” and Mary Lillian (Schmitz) Borin.  When Steve was six months old, his father died suddenly of a massive coronary.  Tragedy would strike again when Steve, age five, was struck by a car and sustained a permanent traumatic brain injury.  Steve attended Laradon Hall School for Exceptional Children in Denver for several years.

In 1968 Mary and Steve moved back to Mary’s hometown of Osmond NE. to live in the original family home and help with the care of aging family members.  Steve continued expanding his education with several years of tutoring by Theresa Rice.  Steve loved to swim and spent the summers in his teen years at the swimming pool.  Ten-minute breaks were spent with Steve gathering the kids around him in a circle and he would tell stories and sing songs.  Steve had a beautiful singing voice and never forgot the lyrics to songs.  He loved songs that made people laugh: “On top of Spaghetti” and Rudolph the Bull Legged Cowboy” to name a few.

When aluminum can recycling became popular, Steve started his “can business”.   He would walk several miles every day picking up cans and crushing them to sell.  Around Osmond he became known as “the can man”.  Steve was a familiar site in his orange vest.  He had the support of the town, with many people dropping off cans at his business headquarters, the family garage.

Steve loved to watch sports.  He was an avid Cornhusker fan and he faithfully watched the Atlanta Braves and St. Louis Cardinal baseball teams.  He enjoyed attending Osmond high school sporting events, especially basketball games with his Uncle Len and later his cousin Mike.  Steve loved horses and started a collection as a young boy that lasted through his life time.

Steve’s mother passed away in 2003.  In 2011 he and his Uncle Len moved into the Randolph Colonial Manor. The Manor quickly became home to Steve, the Residents and Staff his family.

Steve always had a very strong faith.  He was a member of Osmond St. Mary’s Catholic church and participated in mass regularly, with a sincere heart and a booming baritone voice. He was always an hour or two early for every service and would sit quietly and pray.  After Steve moved to Randolph, long-time family friends Bernice and Don Blecha picked up Steve every weekend to attend mass and go for a drive and a meal at Hilltop.  Steve accepted life’s ups and downs with an unyielding faith that was inspirational to all who knew him.

Steve is survived by several cousins.  He was preceded in death by his parents Hal and Mary, Maternal grandparents; Benedict “Ben” Schmitz and Lillian (Kratchovil) (Stanosheck) Schmitz.  Paternal grandparents; Wiliam and Helen Borin, several aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
